The original Sushi yo-yo was crafted to roll the meticulous art of sushi-making - popularised by Jiro Dreams of Sushi - into a sleek, spinning titanium delicacy. Early prototypes aimed for a perfectly sliced 50mm diameter, but the machinist couldn't quite thinly shave the rims enough for caps and rings, resulting in a 50.5mm diameter - still tasty, but not the exact cut that was ordered.

Six years and two "roll-outs" later, Sushi - Japan Edition is finally served up with the full 50mm diameter that was originally dreamed of. Now paired with a wider 50mm width, it achieves a deliciously bold 1:1 width-to-diameter ratio reminiscent of a perfectly packed maki roll. This wider stance enhances catchability and has surprising stability. Weighing a delightful and floaty 60.5g, this yo-yo moves quicker than conveyor-belt sushi.

Sushi - Japan Edition comes plated in two delectable variants:

Otoro (TI40A): Matte, subtle, and sophisticated - much like the quiet confidence of an experienced sushi chef. The engraving features the marbled texture of Otoro, tuna's most prized cut, complete with tendon-like lines. The green One Drop Microcaps Side Effects? They're the chopped scallions atop negitoro (minced tuna and scallions). This classic alloy is RSO’s staple, beloved for its consistent performance and feel.

Uni (Ti-6Al-4V): Bold, vibrant, and unapologetically luxurious - like that premium uni you hesitate to order but can't resist. Engraved to resemble stacked uni gonads (yep, deliciously edible!), complete with bright orange One Drop Microcaps Side Effects echoing the rich hue of Bafun Uni. This titanium alloy is notoriously harder, more durable, and pricier - not only in material cost but in machining difficulty. Previously reserved for special releases like OG Bowl and Mecha-Viszilla, it’s a gourmet throw for the adventurous palate.

Both versions will feature a rice engraving on one side.

Polycarbonate caps or rings will not come with this edition. While polycarbonate rings from previous editions will fit comfortably, the polycarbonate and Freehand Zero caps fit tighter than perfectly compressed sushi rice - so tight, in fact, that installation is absolutely discouraged. Forcing these caps is a guaranteed recipe for disaster: cracked caps, warped rims, frustration-induced tears, and possibly even chopstick injuries. Seriously, resist the urge. Your inner sushi chef will thank you later.

On my September 2024 pilgrimage to Tokyo, I savored vinegary perfection at both Sukiyabashi Jiro Ginza, now run by Yoshikazu Ono, and at its sister branch at Roppongi, helmed by Takashi Ono. Yuuki Yoneno, who journeyed all the way from Kyoto, introduced me to Takashi the night before my meal. After my meals, I thanked both Yoshikazu and Takashi with their very own Otoro versions of Sushi - Japan Edition, capturing the precious moments in photos. The OG Sushi artwork had been updated prior to feature both chefs alongside their father, Jiro Ono.

I met Yuuki Yoneno at my hotel, where he became the first to try out the Sushi - Japan Edition prototype. Although Shimon Osada couldn’t join us in Japan, he made a virtual appearance via video call.

Takeshi Ono, Yuuki Yoneno, and I - pictured the day before my dinner at Sukiyabashi Jiro Roppongi Hills. Yuuki kindly broke the ice by introducing me to Takeshi.

Yoshikazu Ono, Yudai Kawaguchi, and I after an unforgettable dinner at Sukiyabashi Jiro Ginza.

Unfortunately, Shimon Osaka was supposed to join us from Taiwan but his flight was cancelled due to a typhoon - talk about a "stormy sashimi situation"! Nevertheless, Yuuki and I made the most of our Tokyo adventure, stopping by iconic yo-yo shops Spingear and Rewind to soak in even more of the yo-yo culture, with some Burgers in tow.

As an extra-special tribute, the enamel pin accompanying Sushi - Japan Edition features detailed artwork depicting two of Jiro Ono’s legendary hands expertly pressing sushi - capturing the true essence of sushi mastery.

Sushi - Japan Edition isn’t just an upgrade. It’s the fulfillment of the original order. It’s obsessive prototyping, meticulous engineering, and heartfelt connections rolled into one perfect spin - freshly prepared, expertly plated, and served to perfection.
